PUERILE US COVERAGE OF THE LAUNCH OF COSMOPOLITAN MAGAZINE IN VIETNAM

March 17th 2010 06:57
Cosmopolitan magazine was launched in Vietnam this week and honours for one of the most ridiculous commentaries must go to America’s Min Online.
Min’s puerile coverage reads:
“Plenty of emotion and irony here, as Cosmopolitan enters Vietnam, where 50,000-plus Americans lost their lives from roughly the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s fighting Communist North Vietnam. Yet, like China, theoretically ‘Communist’ Vietnam has embraced capitalism, with proof being April's launch of Cosmopolitan's 60th edition in the country.
“…Chances are that many female military personnel (nurses, etc) read Cosmo in Vietnam for R&R just as their male counterparts read Playboy. Now the magazine returns with new meaning to make love, not war.”

Meanwhile a Hearst Magazines International press release about the launch made no mention of war or dead American soldiers.
Instead it simply revealed that Cosmopolitan, the world’s largest-selling magazine for young women, in Vietnam this week, with the April 2010 issue.
Cosmopolitan Vietnam is published in partnership with Vietnamese publisher Sun Flower Media, supported by The Hanoi Media Association.
Cosmopolitan Vietnam will initially be distributed in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and will target 20 to 35-year-old working urban females.
While its overall theme and spirit will mirror the American flagship, with editorial topics including relationships, fashion, beauty, health and career, the magazine will also include local editorial unique to the Vietnamese way of life.
The magazine will initially comprise 180 pages and an initial print run of 20,000 copies, with a cover price of VND29,800 (US$1.50).
Tran Nguyen Thien Huong is managing editor.
