MEDIA CRITICISED FOR LABELLING MUMBAI ATTACKS AS INDIA’S 9/11

Is it kosher for the Mumbai terrorist attacks to be labelled as India’s 9/11?
Much of mainstream media obviously thinks so.
But not Priyamvada Gopal in The Guardian. She claims that to compare 9/11 to Mumbai diminishes both tragedies, and writes, “To characterise last week's tragedy as India's 9/11 is to privilege the experience of the United States as the iconic form of national suffering.
“The attacks on the twin towers were appalling but the fetishisation of September 11 disregards the experiences of the millions who have suffered as much elsewhere, sometimes at the hands of the US. In an India where globalisation has, on some fronts, spelled a relentless Americanisation, a question must be asked.
