EYES WIDE OPEN ON CHINESE SEX

March 18th 2007 21:10
SEX COMES OUT INTO THE OPEN IN CHINA WITH A BANG
Most observers agree that sex, commercial and otherwise, is now rampant in formerly drab and puritanical China. About 70 per cent of Chinese say they’re having sex before marriage, compared with 16 per cent in 1989. A new sex education textbook that was put on sale in the university district of Beijing early in 2003 sold out overnight.
In the spring of 2003, a Shanghai television station began airing Hot Ladies, its own version of Sex and the City, based on a hit comic book in Taiwan that sold three million copies.

Results of a survey conducted by condom maker Durex caused considerable controversy both inside and outside China when it revealed that Chinese are now the world’s randiest people, with the world’s most per capita sexual partners of 19.3, compared with a worldwide average of just 10.5. The survey was attacked as not being representative of the total population, but Durex stuck to its figures saying the survey was just part of the company’s role of “caring for the health of the masses.”
Modern western magazines are appearing in China under licence and the lad’s mag FHM is about to go on sale under the title Men’s Garments. Young Chinese worship the concept of the one night stand, and a recent best-selling book was titled, Breaking Up at First Light: The One-night Stands of 19 City Girls.
A 25 year old woman journalist, Mu Zimei, became an underground heroine by documenting her hectic sex life on a web site. Her book Ashes of Love was banned because of its “extremely depraved moral quality,” but about a third of all people using the net in China logged on to her site.
A Beijing art student, Debbie Cao told a major Chinese newspaper, “Mu Zimei has slept with 70 guys including rock stars! I don’t think I’ll ever reach that number, but you have to acknowledge it’s an achievement.”

When a sex museum opened in Beijing in October 2003 it had to be shut down after its first exhibition after chaotic scenes ensued as too many people tried to cram into the exhibition room. Security personnel looked on helplessly as glass panes and exhibition stands were smashed.
At the time of writing, China was undergoing yet another crackdown on moral licentiousness, but the real crackdown was on publicising or officially recognising the practices. But as far as sex in China goes, it’s still a case of one eye open, one eye closed – and the GDP is booming.

er, I didn't mean it shouldn't be thrown in your face... but it has a different effect when it's not. When I went to China, I was shocked at how un-titillatingly it was, but soon grew to admire other aspects...
