The daughter of Cambodia’s prime minister Hun Sen is rumoured to soon take control of one of the nation’s largest Khmer-language newspapers, the pro-government Kampuchea Thmey.
Hun Sen’s daughter, Hun Mana, is director general of Bayon TV, and on Wednesday The Cambodia Daily newspaper reported that Bayon TV has signed an agreement to share new with Kampuchea Thmey.
Bayon TV general manager Tith Thavarith was quoted as saying that, “Soon, we will be reading Kampuchea Thmey on Bayon TV, adding that the newspaper would also be printing Bayon TV’s news.
The Cambodia Daily pointed out that the cooperation agreement between the two outfits was signed about two months ago.
The Cambodia Daily reported that Kampuchea Thmey owner Try Heng said in an interview in October that Hun Sen’s daughter Hun Mana was in fact about to take control of the newspaper.
The Cambodia Daily reported, “Mr Heng, who said the takeover would be complete by November, could not be reached for comment yesterday, though Mr Thavarith said he was unaware of the plan.
“The newspaper’s editor-in-chief Khieu Navy didn’t have any information on the reported takeover….”
But Navy added that on Tuesday the paper began publishing a four-page English-language insert.
