AL JAZEERA BROADENS US REACH WITH WORLDFOCUS DEAL
The Al Jazeera Network goes from strength to strength, particularly with a boost to its popularity over the incisive nature of its Gaza conflict coverage.
Reuters reports that the Al Jazeera Network announced on Thursday that it has signed a deal to run its news on Worldfocus, a syndicated nightly news program produced in New York and distributed throughout the US.
The deal will help the international news network, one of the top services in the Arabic-speaking world, broaden its reach in the US, where it has been available to only a limited audience.
Worldfocus, hosted by former NBC News correspondent Martin Savidge, is produced by New York City public broadcaster WLIW and syndicated to a number of Public Broadcasting Service affiliates, as well as other stations in 60 US markets, including 27 of the top 30.
The service's Arabic-language network is available in the US through the DISH Network Corp.
The network has started running ads in papers such as The Washington Post and The New York Times, advertising its web presence with the slogan, “Find out what you're missing.”
It also plans to begin running ads in several weeks that a spokesman said will address misconceptions about the network in the US.
The US government criticised the network for irresponsible and biased news reporting when the US launched the 2003 war in Iraq.
LAUNCHES CHILDREN’S CHANNEL
Al Jazeera Children's Channel will target a new age group following the launch of Baraem Channel, the first pan-Arabic pre-school channel.
Baraem is a free-to-air channel and will be broadcast 17 hours a day from its headquarters in Education City, Qatar, on Arabsat, Nilesat and Hotbird.
The channel, owned by the Qatar Foundation for Education Science and Community Development, with all programming n Arabic, will target children aged 3 to 6.
It will produce 15 percent of its programming in-house with the rest being sourced from international production houses. "
Executive general ,manager Mahmoud Bouneb said the channel aimed to attract more viewers with "a bolder trademark and an exciting look" featuring a new line-up of interactive game shows, talk shows, short documentaries and live programs.
DOES DEAL WITH THE INDEPENDENT OVER NEWS ITEMS ONLINE
The Independent in the UK has announced a new online partnership with Al Jazeera English for news bulletins from the broadcaster to appear daily on the Independent website.
The deal, a UK exclusive, means that Al Jazeera English channel's video news bulletins, presented from the channel's broadcast centres in Doha, Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington will be regularly uploaded on to the Independent site. The editorial material is tailored to web users providing short, punchy news round-ups of 2-3 minutes duration and will be refreshed throughout the day.
Al Jazeera English now broadcasts to over 130 million homes worldwide with an editorial mission to give a "voice to the voiceless", reporting stories that often go unreported from regions throughout the world.
Tony Burman, managing director of Al Jazeera English said, “Making our content accessible to international audiences through different distribution channels has been a priority for Al Jazeera and this agreement with the Independent extends that mission. I look forward to our partnership and to expanding our ability for audiences in the UK to see our news.”
